All industries are driven by these needs, exemplified by sector specific trends, in for instance Oil & Gas, towards deepwater developments, remote area access/development, life extension and zero discharge policies. The ubiquitous nature of corrosion and the interdisciplinary fields of corrosion science and engineering embrace most areas of technology. Corrosion afflicts all classes of engineering materials including high strength, high temperature and lightweight materials. Corrosion can proceed by both chemical and electrochemical processes. Surface analysis and engineering is crucial to corrosion understanding and prevention. The management of corrosion in physical assets requires the deployment of testing, inspection and monitoring technologies, and risk-based approaches to life assessment and extension.
